The Role

 

Under general supervision, the Head Cook is responsible for providing supervision of the kitchen as well as cooking staff in a Transitional Housing setting. This work is carried out in support of the mission and goals of Samaritan Daytop Village.

Responsibilities

What You Will Do

  • Provides Food Services supervision to cooks toward building proficiency in institutional cooking.
  • Supervise and maintain clean food preparation areas, cooking surfaces, equipment, and utensils.
  • Monitors compliance with nutrition, sanitary regulations, and safety standards in work areas.
  • Ensures that all food service operations comply with health and safety codes while adhering to the agency menu plan.
  • Ensures meals are prepared and served (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) according to the Department Of Health as well as the Department of Homeless Services regulatory guidelines.
  • Evaluate inventory and order kitchen materials within the guidelines of established purchasing protocols.

Qualifications

Who You Will Be

  • Someone with a High School Diploma, High School Equivalency, or Culinary School training
  • Food Protection Certificate issued by the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.
  • At least Two (2) years of relevant experience as a Cook in a restaurant or similar environment such as the NYC Department of Homeless Services (DHS) or another similar city-operated organization.
  • Good understanding of various cooking methods, ingredients, equipment, and procedures.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills to interact effectively with clients and staff.
  • Available to work a flexible schedule as needed in response to participant and staff needs.
  • Computer literacy including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
