The Daytop Preparatory School

 

 

The Daytop Preparatory School, located in Huntington Station, NY, is seeking a highschool teacher's assistant for grades 9-12 in a SpEd co-teaching model.

 

This is a small alternative school with up to 20 students, separated into 9th/10th grade & 11th/12th grade. 

 

Students at The Daytop Preparatory School are receiving education while participating in treatment programs through Samaritan Daytop Village. The school serves youth who may be experiencing substance use challenges, behavioral difficulties, or co-occurring mental health needs and who benefit from a structured, therapeutic learning environment. Students often require individualized academic instruction and strong social-emotional support. Through its continuum of care, the agency also provides counseling, behavioral health and substance use treatment, case management, and family support services to help students stabilize, continue their education, and successfully transition back to their communities.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with day to day instruction in a special education co teaching model for grades 9 to 12

  • Support and integrate students' clinical treatment and educational goals within a therapeutic, structured environment

  • Engage and instruct students using specific modifications per their Individualized Education Programs

  • Deliver individualized or small group tutoring, remediation, enrichment, and academic coaching

  • Assist with curriculum planning, projects, parent teacher conferences, and student recognition events

  • Help administer, assess, and retest mandated Title 1 Wide Range Achievement Tests

  • Review, update, and maintain accurate academic files for up to 20 students

  • Monitor, document, and communicate student progress, admissions, transfers, and discharges

  • Help prepare, review, and distribute student reports and academic updates

  • Provide student information as requested in strict accordance with confidentiality codes and agency guidelines

Qualifications

  • High school diploma required with a bachelor’s degree in education or a related field preferred

  • NY State Teaching Assistant Certification Level I required with Level II or III certification preferred

  • Minimum of one to year of experience working with high school students, preferably in a school setting

  • Prior experience working with youth experiencing substance use challenges, behavioral difficulties, or mental health needs preferred

  • Demonstrated patience, empathy, and a strong commitment to supporting students in a therapeutic and structured environment

  • Ability to work effectively with students of varying abilities, diverse learning styles, and unique social emotional needs

  • Proven ability to build positive, trusting relationships with students who require individualized academic and emotional supports

  • Capacity to remain calm, flexible, and supportive under pressure while maintaining a safe and encouraging classroom culture

 

Additional Information

This is a full-time non-exempt role with an hourly rate of $20.88-$22.00 per hour (annualized to $38,000-$40,040 at 35 hours per week) with a full benefits package. Benefits include medical, dental, and vision insurance, access to a retirement account with an employer to match, and tuition reimbursement.   

 

This role is located in Huntington Station, NY and has a schedule of Monday-Friday 8am-4pm. 

 

This is a 10-month role with a start date of August 24, 2026 to accommodate organizational onboarding, with the regular school year starting September 3rd.
